Bloemaert, Abraham

Abraham Bloemaert Dutch painter (1566 to 1651)

Abraham Bloemaert was a Dutch painter and printmaker who worked in etchings and engravings. Originally his style was of the Haarlem Mannerists but at the turn of the century he then changed his style to be more of a Baroque style.

Bloemaert as a youth spent three years in Paris where he studied under several masters and on his return to his Holland he took further training with Hieronymus Francken. He later went to Amsterdam before finally settling in Utrecht where he took on the role of the dean of the Guild of St. Luke.

During his lifetime Bloemaert painted and etched historical and allegorical pictures as well as still-life, landscapes, animals and flower pieces.
