Botero, Fernando

Colombian painter Fernando Botero, born 1932

Fernando Botero Angulo was born in Medellín, Antioquia and is a Colombian figurative artist who self-titled himself "the most Colombian of Colombian artists". He come to prominence when he won the first prize at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos in 1959.

Fernando Botero's works includes still-lifes and landscape paintings but Botero tends to primarily focus on situational portraiture. His paintings and sculptures are noted for their exaggerated proportions and the corpulence of the human and animal figures.

Botero explains his use of large subjects as "An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it."

Fernando Botero is an abstract artist and tends to choose what colors, shapes, and proportions based on his own intuitive aesthetic thinking.
