La Pinata was painted by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. It depicts a scene very familiar in Diego Rivera’s home country, the striking of the Pinata. This Mexican tradition has today spread across latin America, but it is thought to have originally originated among the Mayas and Aztecs in Mexico. The striking of the Pinata is traditionally done around Christmas time in Mexico.
In The Pinata, one child has just managed to strike the Pinata and the other kids are running in to grap some of the candy that the Pinata contains. The painting is done in the understated mat colors that were typical of Rivera in this period. It is almost like a mural. The background of the painting fade out, making the exact location of the Pinata party impossible to determine. This also help to move focus to the distinct main object of the painting, La Pinata.
